Spring Cleaning With Essential Oils

April 30, 2015

Essential oils are the ultimate multi-tasker when it comes to spring cleaning and detoxifying your home. Yogis are used to removing our shoes at the door to avoid tracking toxins into our studio space, so beginning this practice at home is a good first step to improving indoor cleanliness and air quality. Adding plants to living areas is also helpful, but replacing chemical household cleaners and air fresheners with natural cleaning recipes and essential oils can have an even greater impact.

Essential oils, made by steaming or cold pressing raw plant material, are safe, naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial, as well as deliciously fragrant. We can work essential oils into our spring cleaning in two important ways: using them to rid our homes of chemical cleaners and fragrances and using them in a diffuser for even more pumped-up power.

Adding the oils to inexpensive green cleaners such as vinegar, baking soda and salt will infuse your home with mood-enhancing fragrance and will save you money by replacing a shelf full of harsh and expensive cleaners will a few products that do double duty. Lemon, Wild Orange, Peppermint and Melaleuca (Tea Tree)

essential oils are three of the most commonly used for household cleaning and detox.

Used around the home, essential oils have natural properties that:

  • Degrease greasy surfaces

  • Kill and prevent germs and bacteria and environmental toxins such as mold

  • Clean shower doors, toilets, windows, ovens, hair brushes – you name it!

  • Shine scuffed floors

  • Repel flies and other pests

  • Remove stains around the house and in the laundry

In addition to detoxifying your home by using essential oils to replace artificial cleaners, an essential oil diffuser can release the oil into the air in a fine mist that does several amazing things for home and body:

  • Purifies and scents the air naturally

  • Stimulates organs such as the brain and lungs

  • Raise oxygen levels in the home

  • Elevates moods, calms anxiety, reduces cold symptoms

  • Neutralizes chemicals, bacteria and viruses

Just as we do twists and inversions to stimulate circulation and wring toxins from our body, essential oils can help us do the same for our home.
